Caring for your Heritage

Please note that these web pages are under gradual change

History

TAS was established in 1997 to record and preserve the historical standing remains for the public interest in the borough of Tameside (a borough of Greater Manchester.) And is a Non profit making organsiation.

Our aims and objectives are;

  1. To work closely with local history societies, local authority, other interested organisation and Tameside residents.To survey, record and preserve standing remains for the historical interest of the borough.
  2. Not to damage, in any way, property belonging to individuals, local authority or any other landowner.

Working Methods

There is tendency for people to assume that archaeology is about 'digging into the past' - it is, but not necessarily physical examination of a site. It is much more important to properly research, survey and record sites and, if in the end it is necessary and desirable to 'dig' a site, proper permission must be sought from the appropriate authority.

From the outset our aim has been to develop TAS into a society known and recognised for its good working practices. With this in mind some simple rules are adhered to at all times;

  1. It is absolutely essential that we preserve and protect property.We do nothing without prior permission.
  2. All members are kept informed about what is happening through a three monthly newsletter.

Professional Links

TAS is affiliated to the Council for British Archaeology(CBA) and a member of the Council for Independent Archaeology.

Our slogan has always been 'Caring for your Heritage' - the links from this site are to do with groups and individuals who also care for the heritage of Tameside and perhaps none more than all of those individuals and organisations who have realised an 'impossible dream' by reopening the Huddersfield Narrow Canal.

Public DIG

Stamford Park 20/7/08 roaring success.

Children found a medal over 100 years old and some prehistory stones used to heat water!

PREHISTORY EXCAVATIONS

TAS has just completed its FOURTH season (2007) on prehistory excavations in Tameside .

We have confirmed a late mesolithic site with stratified finds.

A further bigger project is planned.
