About Us

There is tendency for people to assume that archaeology is about 'digging into the past' - it is, but not necessarily physical examination of a site. It is much more important to properly research, survey and record sites and, if in the end it is necessary and desirable to 'dig' a site, proper permission must be sought from the appropriate authority.

From the outset our aim has been to develop TAS ltd into a society known and recognised for its good working practices.

TAS was established by Meg Brickell and John Marsland who trained at the University of Manchester. They were committed to passing on their skills members of the society many of whom have gone on to become professional archaeologists or now undertake archaeological activities for TAS.

Basic Training consists of the methods used to prepare a site for excavation. This entails;

· Research

· Survey work

· Measuring the site of any proposed trench

· Digging

· Trowelling

· Drawing and final recording prior to the decision as to how best to preserve the remains under investigation.

· Maintenance of the 'Site Diary' (an important document for every site.) The site diary will be the basis for interim and final reports

· Health and safety

As members become more competent further training is suitable. We also gain access to University based professionals for further training on joint projects. Members are encouraged to bring ideas to any project.

Many students who are looking for experience to aid them getting a place  in higher education in archaeology they will complete one or two years with TAS before moving onto the studies. TAS have had the youngest person in the UK to gain a GSE in archaeology.
